The Chieftain assault tank is fitted with asymmetrical armaments, including a 250mm mortar cannon and a twin-barrelled 12.7mm turret.
In-game description

The Silverhand Chieftain - Mk. VI is a Warden Assault Tank manned by 4 crewmembers and armed with a 250mm Mortar Cannon and a 12.7mm Turret.

Description[ | ]

Crew[ | ]

The Chieftain is a large tank that requires a crew of 4: driver, mortar gunner, MG gunner, and commander.

  • The driver is in control of positioning the vehicle, they control when and how to commit the vehicle to combat. The driver is the only crew member who can see the fuel gauge without leaving the vehicle and should carefully monitor its consumption.
  • The mortar gunner controls the tank's 250mm Mortar located in the hull. They fire and reload the gun, although the gunner is dependent on the driver as the gun only has a firing arc of 80 degrees and a 25m range. Use the Mouse Scroll Wheel to adjust the firing distance. The mortar fires in an arc, not in a straight line like other tank turrets. Since the firing arc is not shown to the gunner, the target distance must be provided by the commander or be gauged by the gunner themself to then adjust the mortar's firing distance accordingly.
  • The MG Gunner controls the tank's 12.7mm machine gun turret.
  • The commander can use binoculars to see further than the other crew members and provide information on where other vehicles or structures are and how they can be effectively engaged. The commander is exposed and can be shot at and killed, but they can close the hatch for protection by pressing E. They can use a secondary weapon from the cupola with extreme accuracy and can use this to prevent infantry from closing with the tank from the sides.

Although it is possible to use a tank without a commander, it's not recommended as it will limit your awareness on the battlefield.

Inventory[ | ]

The tank has 6 slots, one must be reserved for the 12.7mm magazines. 250mm shells do not stack in the inventory so the tank can only hold 5 plus one loaded in the gun.

Armament[ | ]

The Silverhand Mk. IV is armed with a common 12.7mm turret which has a 35m effective range and 40m max range, a 4s reload, a 200-round magazine, and can turn 360 degrees. The machine gun is relatively accurate but loses stability the more you shoot, forcing you to fire in small bursts if you wish to be accurate.

It is also armed with a 250mm petard mortar with a 25m range and 8 seconds reload speed, designed for destroying structures. Although the mortar's caliber is impressive, it can't effectively engage enemy vehicles or infantry. It has a 80-degree firing arc. Its range is adjusted with Mouse Scroll Wheel.

Both weapons can potentially be disabled if hit by explosives.

When the hatch is open, the commander can use their secondary weapon to defend the vehicle if necessary.

Health & Armor[ | ]

As an Assault Tank the Chieftain has a lot of health (more than Light Tanks or Cruiser Tanks) and its armor is nearly the best in its class. It can soak up small arms fire, shrapnel, and 12.7mm caliber. Anything else should be considered a threat. Its armor is thick enough to have a decent chance to deflect shells that are not Armour Piercing, especially from the front and at long ranges as long as the armor is in good shape. AP shells have a much higher chance to penetrate, which becomes a near certainty at any range or angle when the armor is in bad shape.

Its tracks can be disabled by explosives and Anti-Tank Mines, making the vehicle slow and thus vulnerable.

Engine & Size[ | ]

The Chieftain has good speed both on and off road but has a pretty high fuel consumption rate. With a 225L fuel tank, its fuel economy is very mediocre. The Fuel Tank is placed at the rear and can be disabled with explosives, making it leak fuel very rapidly. The tank suffers from a slow turn rate compared to other tanks due to its elongated shape.

It can be packaged, forming a large Shippable that can be lifted by a Crane but only transported by a Freighter or Barge.

It is heavy enough to trigger anti-tank mines and too heavy to safely cross Field Bridges. It is large and powerful enough to cross trenches with ease, run over sandbags, tier 1 walls, and Barbed Wire Fences.

Tactics[ | ]

Its very powerful 250mm mortar make it excel against all structures. It can take out most buildings very quickly, it can destroy a Town Base or Relic Base in just a few shots. The 12.7mm turret can fight off enemy infantry but the Chieftain lacks any means to fight enemy tanks, it should thus always have support from friendly tanks before making a push.

With its mediocre maneuverability the tank can really benefit from friendly infantry covering its sides. Shooting infantry with the tank is ineffective and a waste of valuable shells.

Trivia[ | ]

  • In dev stream and dev blog, it was named Silverhand "Chieftan" without an i.
